Erwin W. Gilcris

HARDWICK – Erwin William Gilcris, 83, of Hardwick, died peacefully on Saturday, April 20, at Copley Hospital in Morrisville. His family was by his side.

He was born June 6, 1940, in Hardwick, the son of the late E. Waldo and May E. (Collier) Gilcris. He attended Hardwick Academy.

Following his education, Erwin was employed by Atkins & Anderson Construction, a utility construction company in Springfield, and from 1962 until he retired in 2001, he was employed as a lineman for the Hardwick Electric Company.

On August 1, 1981, he married the love of his life, Edith Roberta “Bobbe” Michaud in Hardwick. Together they combined their two families into one very large family and enjoyed their lives together in their Hardwick country home.

Erwin was a very active member of the Hardwick Fire Department for more than 28 years. Ten of those years were as Hardwick’s fire chief. He was a member of the Caspian Lake Lodge No. 87 F & AM in Hardwick, the Brotherhood of Electric Workers, and the North American Hunters Association. He loved time with his family and just being outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and his friends.

Survivors include his children, Louise Barnes of Hardwick, and Linda Gilcris of Craftsbury; stepchildren, Scott Landry of Graniteville, George Landry of Port Henry, N.Y., Brett McNeil of Hardwick, Lynn Rollins of Barre and Faith Landry of Burlington; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Jeff Coates of West Woodbury; nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Erwin was predeceased by his loving wife, Bobbe on September 25, 2021; his son, Erwin James Gilcris and a stepson, Robb Landry; all his siblings, Larry Gilcris, Edmund W. Gilcris, and Evaden Hallcock.

Visiting hours will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., on Friday, May 3, at Northern Vermont Funeral Home, 60 Elm Street, Hardwick.

Graveside Services will be held at 1 p.m., on Saturday, May 4, in the Fairview Cemetery in Hardwick with Rev. Ernest Machia officiating.
