To the editor:
Most readers of this publication know that Kamala Harris supports a women’s right to abortion access and reproductive freedom. They may not know, however, that she is also a champion of relieving the burden of medical debt.
For more than two years Kamala has spearheaded a federal effort “to ban reporting agencies from incorporating medical debt when calculating credit scores and to block medical debt from being used to evaluate borrowers’ fitness for mortgages and other types of loans”. (Washington Post, 7/26/2024). It is expected that such a rule will be enacted next year, if she is elected president.
About 100 million people are affected by medical debt. Kamala’s initiative is just one example of her focus on pocketbook issues that affect people’s lives.
