
COLCHESTER – Michael Dean Maxwell, “Coach Max”, 76, of Cabot, Vermont, passed away peacefully on August 4, from cancer. at McClure Miller Respite House in Colchester.
Born in Lebanon, N.H., on April 21, 1948, to Darrell and Janette Maxwell, Mike grew up on numerous Army bases. He always spent his summers in Vermont at his grandparents Herbert and Erlene Martin. In 1966 he graduated from Bradford Academy and met the love of his life Deborah (Beamis) Maxwell and wed in 1967. He went on to graduate with honors from Lyndon State College and pursued a career in physical education.
Mike was a voracious reader, a runner (until two hip replacements), a summer golf course groundskeeper, a bird lover (especially cardinals and hummingbirds) and a generous crafter. He loved nothing more than creating something that he could give away for a smile on the recipient’s face. The impact of his generosity has touched many lives through sharing his love of sports and his passion for quilting and wood working.
Mike adored teaching the art of basketball and could be found at sporting events throughout New England, cheering and encouraging athletes at all levels. He coached at numerous Vermont high schools and in Kennebunk, Maine, as well as at Vermont Technical College. He was on the coaching staff of the University of Southern Maine and Norwich University. He enjoyed coaching youth at several camps. To have been coached, mentored or followed by Coach Max has left a profound impact on countless athletes.
He is survived by his wife Deborah (Beamis) Maxwell of 56 years, his daughter Kimberley Maxwell Batson (Brian Smith) of Simpsonville, S.C., and Shannon Maxwell Sanborn (Jon Sanborn) of Barre, his two granddaughters Ella Pitonyak and Samantha Leehman, siblings Judith Forward, Darrell “Moochie” Maxwell and DeeJae Maxwell and numerous extended family members.
