To the editor:
At its heart, democracy is about sharing power for the benefit of people. Though it is not getting the media attention it deserves, there is a 900-page plan written by former political insiders that is set to fully shift that model of governance in the United States. Called “Project 2025: Presidential Transition Project,” the document outlines the far-right’s extreme policy proposals and is a dangerous plan that will undermine further the checks and balances ingrained within the American political system. The result could be destruction of the nation’s democracy form of governance. Although candidate Donald Trump has tried to distance himself from this plan to concentrate power, the truth is that insiders from his administration have been involved in creating the plan.
“Project 2025” would give a Trump presidential team unprecedented power without checks and balances, all for the benefit of wealthy donors and corporations, to the detriment of everyday Americans. Voters must understand that the presidential candidate we choose in this election will determine whether a democracy form of governance is here to serve the majority of people or if our governance will be retooled to benefit the very wealthy few.
We must reject “Project 2025” and instead urge Congress to pass bold, transformative reforms that would reduce the influence of big money in politics, ensure our freedom to vote, and guarantee that congressional districts are drawn to give fair representation for all. At the polls, we must reject candidate Trump and his underwriters, whose priority is to consolidate power for the few.
