To the editor:
Lorraine Hussey passed away several months ago. As a former Hardwickian I followed Lorraine’s timeless work and dedication to volunteering for the Hardwick Academy alumni, her church and the Hardwick Historical Society. If someone originally from Hardwick wanted to contact a friend or to know where that friend lived, they could call Lorraine. She spent many hours helping to organize the Hardwick Academy alumni banquet each year and sent letters to the classes who celebrated their five year reunions. Her church was very important to Lorraine; she served as a reader and worked on special events. With the Hardwick Historical Society, she helped to organize the many donations and helped to keep the society open for the public by manning the facility on many Tuesdays and Thursdays. She also attended the Vermont State Historical Society’s annual gathering in Tunbridge.
Many of her hours were spent at the Hardwick Gazette office going through old Gazettes. She would copy articles and send them to friends and family of the people mentioned. The Historical Society was also a recipient of articles about the history of Hardwick.
With Lorraine you didn’t have to wonder what she was thinking about a given subject. She spoke openly and intelligently and gave her opinion.
This lady deserves a room named after her in the Historical Society at the Depot. Plaques, etc. just aren’t enough. Hardwick will never see a Lorraine Hussey again. She is an icon and worthy of special recognition.
