A Uniting Force for the Orleans District

To the editor:

Katherine Sims recently released a campaign advertisement contrasting the idyllic narrative of our Northeast Kingdom (NEK) Senate District with the day-to-day realities for individuals and families living here and struggling with affordability.

Overall, more than 46% of the NEK population is over 55. We have the highest poverty rate in the state at over 13%. Our neighbors, friends and families are on the frontlines of rising inflation and cost of living increases. The challenges are many and we need leadership willing to face these challenges and work with communities for innovative and holistic solutions. I believe Katherine Sims is that person.

From flood recovery work to striving to understand the intricacies of the working lands economy, to fighting for broadband expansion into the most rural areas of our district, Katherine listens to everyone involved. She seeks out those excluded from conversations around the issues that impact their lives.

Speaking with Katherine, it is evident that she sees the person in front of her and strives to understand how their personal story intersects with the collective story of our district.

While many folks in the NEK are forced to work two or three jobs to simply survive, this should not be the norm. Katherine is committed to fighting for tax cuts for those earning the least and lowering the costs of basic needs such as housing, health care, and childcare. These needs, along with education, jobs, infrastructure and climate, are interrelated and all of us are impacted by the disparity we see in our communities. Katherine understands this.

Now more than ever we need someone in the statehouse who has the capacity to unite across differences. Division and only governing for those who align themselves with a particular agenda will not move us forward. Our district requires inclusive leadership to address the unique needs of the people who live here. Katherine looks to the future to address those needs while understanding the rich traditions of this area. Through the overhaul of Act 250, to the five-year plan for EMS services, to the forest future road map to boost the forest economy, to lowering the cost of healthcare for seniors, to making childcare more affordable, she has fought for bold changes so our part of the NEK is livable for everyone for generations to come. She is not only willing to listen to views that are in opposition to hers but believes that it is only in seeking to understand each other that we will ever be able to build a future that works for everyone in the NEK.

Every person matters to Katherine, no exceptions, and that is why she has my vote to represent the Orleans District in the State Senate.
