HARDWICK – Happy meteorological autumn! Yesterday was an excellent reminder of the change of seasons in progress, with several valley hollows reporting Tuesday morning low temperatures in the upper 30s. No widespread frost was observed, also mitigated somewhat by patchy dense fog. However, locations like Plainfield reported a low temperature of 37F. It was 39F in Greensboro and 40F in Cabot. This comes in the wake of some seasonably warm and humid conditions that preceded the half inch of precipitation falling with the weekend rain.
High pressure is currently fueling our sunshine and cooler temperatures. It remains in control of our weather through at least Friday, with even the first part of Saturday even appearing rain-free at this point. As is the case when high-pressure systems move off the coast, we turn from a northwesterly to southerly flow. This means that as we move into tomorrow, we start to see a modest increase in temperatures that continues into the first half of the weekend.
Things then start to turn a little complicated as we get into later Saturday and Sunday. That blocking high slows the approach of an upper-level low diving down from Canada. As such, it appears the low will hang west of us longer, limiting the progression of heavy rain, although that could be altered with any change of the timing. The alternative and less likely scenario is the Canadian low pulls in moisture from the southeastern United States, bringing a swath of heavy rain for Sunday. For now, expect scattered showers Saturday night into Sunday, with a brief period of steady rain early and mid-day Sunday. Cooler and showery conditions will return to close out the weekend. Now let’s take a look at that forecast:
Wednesday: Sunny. High: 74. Low: 48.
Thursday: Sunny. High: 77. Low: 52.
Friday: Mostly sunny. High: 77. Low: 54.
Saturday: Increasing clouds. Scattered showers starting in the afternoon, High: 75. Low: 57.
Sunday: Rain in the morning, transitioning to scattered showers later in the afternoon. High: 74. Low: 50.
