Thornton-Sherman’s Hilltopper Storm into States, Elmore Mountain 10K Results, Richards Qualifying Run Ends
MONTPELIER – With several local runners in action last week in the NVAC Cross-Country Championships at U-32 High School, Andrew Thornton-Sherman and his St. Johnsbury (SJA) boys team stole the show and look primed to win a fourth consecutive Division I title.
Thornton-Sherman (16:06), Emmett Johnson (16:13), and Isaac Lenzini (16:14) made it a clean sweep of the top overall three spots in the boys 5,000m over the weekend. SJA (22) breezed past host U-32 (81) to capture the team competition.
Former Craftsbury Academy (CA) champion Charlie Kehler finished seventh overall for SJA. Thornton-Sherman has been the best high school runner in the state on the track and trail the past two seasons. The Hilltoppers will look to capture their fourth consecutive state title this coming weekend and first since the sudden passing of their legendary coach Chip Langmaid this past summer.
In Division III, Stowe’s Enzo Delena (17:28) and Nico Delena (17:41) captured the top two spots as the Raiders look poised to end CA’s four-year reign of championships within the division. Freshman Stig Linck (9th) was the top runner for the Chargers, followed by a top twenty finish from junior Owen McKibben. Danville’s top runner was sophomore Nolan Cargill (21st), while junior Lewis LaPierre (24th) led Hazen Union. In the girls 5,000m, Danville freshmen Sycada Barnes and Molly Daniels, along with Hazen sophomore Chloe Dyer posted top 20 finishes.
The Vermont High School Cross-Country State Championships will be held this Saturday at Thetford Academy.
