Gamelan Sulukala Concert, Nov. 2

MONTPELIER – In a rare concert performance, the local Javanese orchestra Gamelan Sulukala will appear at Bethany United Church of Christ, Saturday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m.

Birthed in the late 1960s by Dennis Murphy as a village gamelan made of hand-crafted instruments, and nurtured through the 2000s by Steven and Kathy Light, this orchestra has survived through multiple permutations and personnel changes to a program of traditional and contemporary pieces, including premiere performances of three new compositions by members of the group.

Javanese Gamelan is a group, or orchestra, of about 30 instruments, ranging from gongs to flutes with lots of xylophone and kettle-type instruments in between. Currently it is being played by a community group of 13 members who range in age from their 20s to their 70s with every decade in-between represented.

For more information contact [email protected] or visit Gamelan Sulukala’s website (sites.google.com/site/gamelansulukala/) to find audio and video recordings of the gamelan.

Bethany Church, is located at 115 Main St.
