Cooler Conditions, Snow Showers in Forecast

Share article

HARDWICK— The roller coaster of extremes remained evident in the last forecast period, as mild air allowed daytime highs to once again top out near 70. That is about 15 to 20 degrees above normal for high temperatures this time of year. Serial cold front passages led to some cooling, and we ended up 10 degrees below normal for highs by Saturday. Gusty winds accompanied the Friday evening frontal passage. Surprisingly, with as much of a disruption as it caused to electricity, the storm did not come with much rain. Totals for the entire week barely reached a tenth of an inch.

Another frontal system traversed northern Vermont yesterday, with one additional cold front dropping temperatures enough to leave some snow showers in its wake at our mid-elevation locations. It will feel much colder through the work week, with high pressure influencing us from the north, keeping precipitation out of the picture until we get into the second half of Friday.

Mostly sunny skies will be accompanied by relative humidity in the 30 to 40 percent range and some gusty winds again, especially Friday. While burn bans have lifted for northern and central Vermont counties at this time, we expect the fire danger to increase through Friday. Consult with your local fire warden to obtain a burn permit and determine appropriateness of any outdoor burning activities.

The precipitation that falls Friday will start out as rain, but quickly changes to snow as cold air approaches on a retrograding low from the Atlantic. Rain and snow showers linger into Saturday night, with an inch or two of accumulation possible. The low should pull away for Sunday, with moderating temperatures and clearing skies. Here are the forecast details for the next five days:

Wednesday: Mostly sunny. High: 38. Low: 16.
Thursday: Mostly sunny. High: 41. Low: 18.
Friday: Increasing clouds. Rain and snow showers likely by afternoon, turning to all snow overnight. High: 39. Low: 28.
Saturday: Mostly cloudy. Scattered rain and snow showers. High: 41. Low: 29.Sunday: Partly sunny. High: 43. Low: 31.
Sunday: Partly sunny. High: 43. Low: 31.
