Some Snow In Store For Thanksgiving

Share article

HARDWICK – Blustery conditions wrapped up the weekend, with the re-introduction of some colder air, causing steady precipitation to end on Sunday in the form of a few snow showers. A trace of snow was reported at the East Hardwick observing station (1,100 feet), with a station at North Greensboro (just above 2,000 feet) reporting 2.9 inches between Saturday and Sunday. Stations in Cabot and West Woodbury around 1,500-1,900 feet came in with a one to a few tenths of an inch of accumulation.

A weak bubble of high pressure meant highs locally made it to 40 on Monday, but the antecedent cold air prevented things from getting much warmer. It turns out those values are normal for this time of year. The soaking precipitation from the weekend dropped the fire danger for our region to moderate. Precipitation returned in a mixed form Tuesday morning with antecedent freezing temperatures leading to ice accumulations on area roadways.

Our big area of attention is turkey day. It has taken computer modeling a long time to sort out a low-pressure system ejecting from the central Appalachians to the Atlantic coastline Thursday. American models are showing a flatter low that moves south of New England, with the precipitation shield reaching southern Vermont as some light snow. The European model, though, shows a robust coastal feature developing and moving along the New England coastline, with eastern parts of Vermont seeing four to eight inches of snow Thursday evening into Friday morning.

Both camps are starting to split the difference in track and are leaning toward some light to moderate snow for Thursday, quickly exiting on Friday. Partly cloudy conditions persist through the weekend with an outside chance of a snow shower near the mountains. Here are the forecast details:

Thanksgiving:  Snow, steadiest in the afternoon and evening. Total accumulation of 2-4”. High: 38. Low: 30.
Friday: Mostly cloudy. Scattered snow showers near the mountains. High: 32. Low: 18.
Saturday: Partly sunny. High: 30. Low: 16.
Sunday: Partly sunny. High: 28. Low: 16.
