ST. JOHNSBURY – On Friday, Dec. 6, the holiday classic, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” comes to the Athenaeum Art Gallery, with performances at 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
The stage reading will travel back to Christmas Eve, 1946, and experience the classic tale of desperation, hope, redemption and joy in the small town of Bedford Falls. A slide show will bring the audience back to St. Johnsbury in 1946, when the town was anchored by the Fairbanks Factory’s 40-building complex, had a vibrant business district on Main Street, and was promoted as a town of churches (14).
Presented as a staged reading in a 1940’s radio drama format, the Athenaeum Players brings to life dozens of characters. The cast includes well-known actors of many ages from the St. Johnsbury area. Musical accompaniment, including the sound of angel wings and seasonal carols, will be provided by local organist and bell player, Pam Dearborn.
The play is drawn from Joe Landry’s adaptation of the screen classic, based upon Philip van Doren Stern’s short story, “The Greatest Gift.” The production is being directed by Damian Ryan. Adele West-Fisher is executive producer. The performances are free, ADA accessible, and open to the public.
The Antheneum is located at 1171 Main St. For more information, call (802) 748-8291 Email: [email protected] Website: www.stjathenaeum.org
