Donnie was drafted into the US Army in 1966. He was stationed in Fayetteville, N.C., before being deployed to Vietnam. He was honorably discharged from active duty in 1968 and returned to his family in Hardwick.

During his working years, Donnie was employed by several construction companies, he also owned and operated his own company, D.A. Moulton Construction, and in later years he served as road commissioner of Calais, Vermont. He retired at the age of 70.

He enjoyed hunting, camping, and playing cards, but most of all he was a homebody. He loved spending time with his family.
