HARDWICK – While this forecast is being issued in the longer-term sense, the large-scale patterns are strong and consistent for the early part of the forecast period, beginning Christmas Day, December 25. The dome of high pressure responsible for the cold and clear conditions last weekend remains overhead and will begin to shift to the east through the rest of the work-week. Mostly sunny conditions will prevail, but we will begin to see a moderating trend in temperatures as we head later in the forecast period. The Climate Prediction Center is predicting 75 percent chance of above-normal temperatures during this time, with the remaining probability learning to near-normal.
The pattern is highly meridional and blocked during the time period, meaning pattern changes are slow to progress, but when the change occurs, there is a large shift in precipitation probabilities. We do expect some rain to approach by the end of this weekend as the high decays, but it will be in the form of rain. Knowing we’re forecasting well over a week out, here’s our best guess as to how things will unfold:
Christmas Day: Mostly sunny. High: 25. Low: 18.
Thursday: Mostly sunny. High: 34. Low: 23.
Friday: Partly sunny. High: 38. Low: 30.
Saturday: Partly sunny. High: 40. Low: 31.
Sunday: Increasing clouds. Rain developing by evening. High: 39. Low: 32.
