Lady Cats Start Title Defense in Style

HARDWICK – The defending Division III champion Hazen Union girls basketball team punished Danville in the paint in their season opener last week, running their winning streak to 20 straight games dating back to last December.

Sophomore Kelsie Rivard poured in 21 points, including 17 in the second half to power the Lady Cats to a 73-28 home win over Danville last Tuesday. Isabelle Gouin scored 17, Autumn Dailey 12, and Mya Lumsden 10 to round out a balanced scoring attack that gave Hazen a 33-13 lead heading into the break. Lauren Joncas paced the Lady Bears with 16 in the loss.

Lyndon Institute was the last team to hang a loss on Hazen at the buzzer early last season and the Lady Cats welcomed them to the Cat Den on Thursday on Banner Night. After Christmas Break, Hazen will travel to West Rutland, January 2, before squaring off against Peoples Academy at the Second Annual Winter Solstice, January 4, at the Barre Auditorium.

Lady Wolves Clip Twinfield-Cabot Girls in Opener

MORRISVILLE – A much improved Peoples Academy (PA) squad outlasted the Twinfield-Cabot girls basketball team at home last week in the season opener for both teams.

Daisy Berg scored a game-high 13 points to lead PA to a hard-fought 47-35 home win over the Lady Trojans last Tuesday. Sophie Beck punished Twinfield-Cabot inside with eight points and 13 rebounds in the win. Chloe North led the Lady Trojans with nine points in the loss.

After the holiday break, Twinfield-Cabot will square off against Williamstown in a much-anticipated rematch at the Barre Auditorium, January 3. Williamstown denied the Lady Trojans a trip to the Division IV Final Four by three points last March in a quarterfinal thriller.

Catamounts Cap Off Dream Season with National Title

CARY, N.C. – The University of Vermont (UVM) men’s soccer team mounted another improbable comeback against No. 13 Marshall to win the program’s first ever national championship at the College Cup Final.

Maximillian Kissel scored the game-winner on an incredible individual effort to power the Catamounts to a 2-1 sudden-death overtime win over Marshall last Monday to win the NCAA Men’s Soccer National Championship. Tarik Pannholzer gave the Thundering Herd a 1-0 lead in the 57th minute before Marcell Pope came off the Catamount bench to find the equalizer with nine minutes left in regulation. Kissel’s heroics marked his sixteenth goal of the season and the junior forward’s third game-winner in four weeks, dating back to UVM’s 2-1 win over Bryant in the America East Championship. Vermont earned its first national championship in a team sport in school history, became the first school from the America East to capture a national title, and the first unseeded team to win the College Cup in nearly two decades.

The Catamounts’ journey to the national title covered over 7,000 miles of travel with road wins over Iona, No. 7 Hofstra, San Diego, No. 2 Pitt, and No. 3 Denver and No. 13 Marshall in Cary, N.C.
