CABOT – Walter Bothfeld Sr. passed away peacefully in his home in Cabot on December 20. Walter was born on December 22, 1926 in Sherborn, Mass., and the family moved to Vermont in 1936 to the farm on Bothfeld Hill Road in Cabot. He graduated from Cabot High School and Vermont Technical College in 1944 with a special wartime degree in Agriculture. In 1948, he married Roberta Perry.
Walter was very active in his community serving as select man in the town of Cabot for nine years and as a member of the county committee for the Natural Resource Conservation District, helping farmers representing Washington County for 18 years. Walter assisted others in Marshfield and Plainfield to maintain a weekly cribbage group, a game he loved. He took part in committee work for the Cabot Cooperative Creamery and worked hard to keep the cooperative processing facility in the town of Cabot.
In 1993, Walter, along with his two sons, was honored as Dairy Farm of the Year in the State of Vermont.
Walter was predeceased by his wife Roberta and brothers Theodore, Charles, Robert, Richard, and Clark. He is survived by his sister, Mary Golden of Maine. He is survived by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren respectively: Walter and Rose Bothfeld Jr. of Cabot; David Bothfeld and Karin Seidel of Hyde Park; Stephen and Amy Bothfeld of Cabot and Diane Bothfeld and Mary Peabody of Fort Myers, Fla., grandchildren Raymon Bothfeld of Cabot, George Bothfeld of Hyde Park, Fawn Wells of Cabot and Danelle Hollyer of Williamstown; great-grandchildren Chandler, Lexi, Nicholas, River, Owen, Cassiopeia, Katlin and Kianna.
A service will be held in the spring in Cabot. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Cabot United Church of Christ, PO Box 127, Cabot, VT 05647. Arrangements are with the des Groseilliers Funeral Home. Condolences and memories of Walter may be shared with his family at dgfunerals.com.
