BARRE – Avenging last year’s loss in the Division IV quarterfinals, the Twinfield-Cabot girls basketball team raced past Williamstown over the weekend at the Second Annual Winter Solstice Classic at the Barre Auditorium.
Senior Kendall Fowler poured in 24 points to lead Twinfield-Cabot to a decisive 57-39 win over Williamstown on Friday night. Fellow senior Jorja Washburn complimented with 18 as the dynamic duo unlocked a stagnant Lady Trojan offense that had sputtered in their first two games of the season. Chloe North chipped in with nine points as Twinfield-Cabot took a 28-22 lead into the break and ballooned their lead to 45-31 with eight minutes to play. Coming off an impressive win against Randolph before the break, the Lady Blue Devils fell to 1-4 on the season. After his team’s 0-2 start, Twinfield-Cabot head coach Jack Whalen felt like his team needed to bring more energy, starting with him.
“I’m passionate and competitive about this game to my core and I feel like I tried to tone that down a little bit so far this season, and we came out flat because of it. I take responsibility for that, so I brought the energy to the Aud and the girls brought even more energy to the court. They wanted this game against that team, and they went out and executed, especially the last three quarters. Credit to Williamstown’s team and coaching staff, they play hard from start to finish. We are still trying to figure out how to have an inside presence this year, and sophomore Birtu Lindert-Boyes really stepped up with some huge boards and great physicality in this game. This building is a special place to play in. Both communities did a great job supporting their programs and I’m so proud of the girls for how they performed on such a big stage,” said Whalen.
Whalen’s senior laden squad was coming off a disappointing 35-30 loss to Rivendell Academy just before the Christmas Break. Fowler (14 points) and Washburn (10) led the way once again, but the team lacked scoring balance and energy for the second straight game.
“They played a box on Kendall the first two games of the season and we struggled to adjust to it and match the physicality of our opponents. We gave up way too many second chance points on the glass and that killed us. Kendall, Jorja, and point guard Carley Mancini are leading this team as we adjust to a different style of play this season. This team is putting in a lot of work and we’re starting to see progress. We’re excited for the rest of the season, I need to keep the energy up, and we’re going to try to build off of this big win,” said Whalen.
Twinfield-Cabot traveled to Northfield on Tuesday and will stay on the road against crosstown rival Danville on Thursday night. They wrap up a busy week with a rematch against Peoples Academy on Saturday afternoon in Marshfield.
