HARDWICK – The holiday season panned out with enough cool air and moisture in place to bring our region a white Christmas. This was quickly followed by a warm airmass migrating in, removing a substantial part of the snowpack by New Year’s Eve, when the pattern shifted again to cooler conditions with a plowable accumulation of snow and ongoing snow showers, bringing us back to a seasonable picture.
We continue in a pattern of unsettled weather for the next several days, as the low over the Canadian Maritimes responsible for the recent snow lingers for the next 48 hours, bringing a mix of sun and clouds with scattered snow showers over the mountains. Accumulations will be a couple inches, at most, during this time. It will remain seasonable with daytime highs in the teens and lows between zero and 10 above zero. More sunshine prevails to close the work week and start the weekend, with a slight moderation in temperatures.
Several model runs of the American/GFS model had a low-pressure system ejecting from the Gulf Coast this weekend and developing into a coastal storm off the New England shoreline, however most models and ensembles favor keeping this system well to the south. There may be a few snow showers Sunday morning, but accumulations will be light.
