NEWPORT – Multi-sport superstar Sabine Brueck became the all-time leading scorer at North Country last week, breaking the previous record held by Kylie Wright and Hazen Union Lady Cat assistant coach Sue (Micknak) Rivard.
With less than a minute left in the first quarter in a 42-33 win over Spaulding last Tuesday, Brueck converted a layup to surpass the 1,316 career point record set by Rivard and matched by Wright. Rivard set the record for the Lady Falcons in 1996, and Wright matched it in 2018. Rivard went on to play for Clarkson University and has watched her own children follow in her footsteps the last few years. Her oldest son Tyler Rivard, graduated from Hazen Union in 2023 with Capital League Player of the Year honors in both basketball and baseball. He scored nearly 1,200 career points for the Wildcats, leading them to a title in 2022, and is the only player in program history with both 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. Her daughter Kelsie was a Vermont Dream Dozen selection last winter, earned Mountain League Freshman of the Year honors, and helped lead the Lady Cats to their first Division III basketball state championship since 1991. Brueck will graduate next spring as one of the best high school athletes to come out of the state of Vermont. Her resume includes Vermont Gatorade Player of the Year honors in both basketball and track and field, multiple individual and team state titles in track and field, and she will also represent Team Vermont this summer in the Twin State Soccer Lions Cup against New Hampshire’s best. Brueck will attend Montana State this coming fall on a track and field scholarship.
