FAIRFAX – The Twinfield-Cabot girls basketball team improved their chances of hosting a home playoff game next month with a pair of wins against BFA-Fairfax and Blue Mountain last week, evening their record at 6-6 on the season.
Kendall Fowler led all scorers with 14 points to help the Lady Trojans pull away late in a 37-27 road win over BFA-Fairfax last Tuesday. Jorja Washburn added 13 points for Twinfield-Cabot, who gradually pulled away from a defensive 13-13 gridlock at halftime. Aci See led the Lady Bullets with 10 and senior Anna Villeneuve chipped in with seven in the loss. Fellow seniors Lexi Wesson, Chesney Owen, and Cam Slingerland were honored before the game on Senior Night.
“With all the changes in the schedule over the last few weeks, it’s been challenging to establish any kind of rhythm. We started slow, but the girls continued to work hard and started to see some shots fall in the second half,” said head coach Jack Whalen.
Washburn took over offensively Saturday afternoon, outscoring Blue Mountain all by herself with a 25-point outburst to power the Lady Trojans past the Lady Bucks at home 39-23. Chloe North and Carley Mancini combined for eight more points to compliment Washburn’s season-high in the win. Blue Mountain was game early for a possible road upset, taking a 15-14 advantage into the break behind a pair of first half threes from Ava Kingsbury. Washburn fueled a 15-3 run for the home team to start the second half and the rout was on. Kingsbury led Blue Mountain with 19 points and five assists and Addison Murray dished out five assists of her own in the loss. Whalen noted hard work on improving his team’s shooting and pressuring the basketball to improve on their slow starts.
“We started slow in both games, however this team continues to play together and work extremely hard. We have had different players step in at important times and even when shots aren’t falling, we keep fighting. This is exactly how we need to play going into the final weeks of the regular season,” said Whalen.
Following a pair of losses to the Mountain League’s cream of the crop in Hazen and Richford, Whalen’s veteran squad righted the ship last week, vaulting them back up to the No. 6 spot in the current Division IV standings. They looked to carry that momentum into a tough road trip to fourth ranked Williamstown on Tuesday before welcoming a Winooski team to Marshfield on Wednesday night that has won four of five.
