EAST HARDWICK – A little taste of sunshine brought back some moderating temperatures Monday and Tuesday as highs made it into the low to mid 40s. These temperatures arrived on a moderately strong southwest wind on the backside of a high-pressure system. The moderation comes after a start to the forecast period with breezy conditions and wind chill values in the 20s below zero. A couple of inches of snow fell during the forecast period and our snow base largely remains around two feet in depth, with higher elevations closer to three feet.

For most of the week, we straddle the jet stream on the warmer side, featuring intervals of precipitation mixed with 24-hour breaks in between. After a mild day on Wednesday that features primarily cloudy skies due to a nearby front, a clipper system pinwheels in by daybreak Thursday. Precipitation will start as snow, then mix with rain in the afternoon as highs approach the freezing mark. That system departs by Friday morning with just a couple of inches of snow accumulation. Some clouds linger throughout the day, with partly sunny conditions by afternoon.
Another low arrives by Saturday morning. This one appears slightly cooler and more robust. Light snow will fall throughout the day, with total accumulations of up to four inches possible by Sunday morning. There may be a brief mix with rain in the afternoon. This low will pull down more cold air from Canada, meaning temperatures will plummet by Sunday night with lows once again below zero. Wind chills may again reach -20. Here are the forecast details:
Wednesday: Mostly cloudy. High: 39. Low: 17.
Thursday: Mostly cloudy. Light snow, with a mix of rain and snow in the afternoon. 1-2” of snow accumulation. High: 35. Low: 20.
Friday: Scattered snow showers in the morning, becoming partly sunny. High: 26. Low: 5.
Saturday: Cloudy. Light snow, possibly mixed with rain midday. Total accumulations of 2-4”. High: 32. Low: 4.
Sunday: Partly cloudy, becoming mostly sunny. High: 14. Low: -10. Wind chill values as low as -23.
