MVU School Budget, $1.2M Bond Pass

HARDWICK – The Mountain View Union (MVU) Elementary School District Australian ballot vote on articles 5 and 6, town meeting day, March 4 resulted in the $8,973,600.32 budget passing with 353 votes in favor to 259 votes against, out of 612 votes cast. MVU estimated the proposed budget will result in per pupil education spending of $15,582.40, 16.37% higher than per pupil education spending for the current year.

The vote to approve a bond for $1.2 million for the purpose of necessary energy efficiency improvements at Hardwick Elementary School (HES)passed 396 to 211 with 606 votes cast.

MVU held its annual school district meeting, the week before, Tuesday, Feb. 25, in the Hardwick Elementary School (HES) gym. Moderator Orise Ainsworth was reelected as moderator.

District Clerk Jennifer Laundry nominated Kevin Moore and Samantha Friend nominated current Lorelei Wheeler. A paper ballot was called for and 55 votes were cast with Moore receiving 30 and Wheeler 24. Moore, a former board chair, began serving as the new clerk beginning February 26.

Tonia Chase was reelected as treasurer with Adam Gann continuing to serve as alternate treasurer and salaries were approved as warned.

The three-year term for Hardwick School district director was decided by paper ballot, with Kyle Anderson receiving 49 votes and Neal Yurick 7.

One year remaining of a three-year term for another Hardwick School district director was again voted by paper ballot with Megan Shatney receiving 30 votes, Donald Cota 16 and Neal Yurick 12.

Simon Cohen was elected Stannard School district director for one-year remaining on a three year term by voice vote.

Woodbury’s School district director for two years remaining on a three-year term was decided by paper ballot with Heather Meacham receiving 38 votes and Melissa Grant 20.

The board was authorized to borrow money in anticipation of revenue and to transfer $257,668.50 of unobligated year-end fund balances to a reserve fund for building maintenance and repairs for all buildings.

Names were taken for the board to appoint someone to fill an unwarned vacancy for a Hardwick director’s position with Donald Cota, Neal Yurick and Leah Devenger proposed.for appointment at a later meeting.
