Welcome Leads Dramatic Turnaround at PA into Postseason

Share article

MORRISVILLE – Hazen Union alum Rick Welcome and his Peoples Academy (PA) varsity girls basketball team downed Harwood and Montpelier last week to earn the No. 5 seed in the upcoming Division III state tournament.

The first-year head coach has his team on a five-game heater as the Lady Wolves wrapped up the regular season at 14-6. It is a remarkable turnaround for a team that has four eighth graders on the roster, finished with one-win last winter and opted not to participate in the state tournament.

The Lady Wolves will host No. 12 BFA-Fairfax in the first round on Wednesday night. If they advance, they will travel to the winner of the White River Valley/Thetford Academy on Saturday in the quarterfinals.
