GREENSBORO – Videos of several Camden Conference speakers, including this year’s keynote, Maria Ressa, will be streamed at the Highland Center for the Arts, Sunday, March 23, 1 to 3:30 p.m., following the Cabin Fever Brunch. Those attending will then engage in dialogue with neighbors about topics that are of most concern.
Thirty-eight years ago, a group of civil servants came together in midcoast Maine and created the Camden Conference; a nonprofit, non-partisan educational organization “to foster informed discourse on world issues.” Every February since 1987, the committee of the conference has chosen topics of national and international interest and brought to the stage speakers, each expert in their field.
This year’s Camden Conference keynote, Maria Ressa, is the co-founder and CEO of Rappier, a digital news site in the Philippines. Ressa’s efforts working for freedom of the press (for which she was threatened with over 103 years in jail and 10 criminal charges) drew international attention. In 2021 Ressa received the Nobel Peace Prize for her persistence in broadcasting the truth. Her most recent book, “How to Stand Up to a Dictator,” published in 2022, has been translated into more than 20 languages.
