Veterans Wanted

To the editor:

As American Legion Post 7 in Hardwick prepares for the nomination of officers at our next meeting on Thursday, March 20, at 7 p.m., (more on that in a moment), we would like to invite all veterans who have served at any time since December 7, 1941, right up to the present to join us in our continued service to veterans, their families and their communities. The American Legion is the nation’s largest and most influential organization of U.S. veterans with 1.6 million members who support their communities in more than 12,000 posts worldwide.

Now, on to the local business of Hardwick Post 7 and the nomination of officers mentioned above. This is your opportunity to make your voice heard. It’s also your opportunity to step into an office if you wish. All offices are up for nomination/election. Those offices are commander, first vice commander, second vice commander, adjutant, finance officer, sergeant-at-arms, chaplain, service officer and member-at-large. Most of our officers have been serving for years, just waiting for the time that others might want to step up and take over leadership. Despite nationwide declines in membership due to our senior veterans passing and not enough of recent/current generations of veterans joining, the American Legion is still a strong, viable organization and our post is in good condition. It is for those recent/current veterans that our senior membership serves and maintains our post. It is our responsibility to see to it that we keep our post viable for future generations, just as it is your responsibility to do so for future generations of veterans. All Legionnaires are welcome at our meetings and especially at the next two meetings, the second of which is our election meeting on Thursday, April 17, 7 p.m. Attend the meetings. Consider running for an office. Younger veterans know what they want a post to be in order to meet their needs. This is your opportunity to shape the post into what you want it to be.

We hope to see you at the meetings and welcome your participation in deciding the leadership and direction of our post now and in the future.
