To the Editor:
I would like to address my dearest friends, neighbors and allies in Canada. I am writing in the hopes you will consider taking on Vermont as your 11th Province. If not as a Province, perhaps a territory. We have enjoyed so much freedom, support and genuine caring from each other that I believe this is a natural fit. Vermonters politics currently align much more with yours; communities of inclusion, respect and honor. I know there may be an ongoing controversy about whose maple syrup is best but I am sure we can have respectful debates about this hot topic.
My husband and I are both veterans and never believed that in the United States we would watch our Veterans Affairs rights and benefits come under attack or our retirement accounts decimated or having medical bills that require a payment plan or become afraid to write a somewhat sarcastic and tongue in cheek letter. That’s the real reason I am writing to you, Oh, Canada, today while I am still free to do so.
I encourage all Americans, Vermonters and Canadiens to joyously revel in our shared democracy! United we stand, divided we fall!
Merci,
Mary Wheeler
