Snow to Start, Milder by Weekend

Share article

EAST HARDWICK – Filtered sunshine and high temperatures in the 60s on Monday offered more reassurance that spring is on the way.

Our last forecast period included an episode of snow amounting to about 3 to 6 inches by midday Wednesday. Higher elevations of Greensboro came in closer to nine inches. Temperatures moderated some through the rest of the week, with total precipitation amounts of less than half an inch over the last seven days. The East Hardwick observing station received 0.37” of precipitation in the seven days ending Monday morning. Additional precipitation that fell over the weekend did include some mixed precipitation, with more snow accumulations south of our area.

The warmth seen on Monday and Tuesday will quickly be extinguished by nearly-identical repeating weather conditions for the upcoming forecast period. An exiting low-pressure system with a lingering trough will bring elevation-dependent snow showers through this evening, with some of the valley floors mixing with rain. Up to an inch of accumulation is possible in these lower elevations, such as Hardwick, Wolcott village and the Winooski River headwaters. Up to 4” is possible at elevations such as Coles Pond, North Greensboro and East Craftsbury. The system exits on Thursday, with partly sunny conditions and additional warming by Friday.

A frontal boundary arrives Saturday morning, with a brief period in the warm sector, before a cold front crosses by mid-afternoon. Expect a steady rain by daybreak with a brief pause before more showery precipitation arrives as the front passes. There may be a couple of thunderstorms as well. Highs will reach the upper 50s to low 60s on Saturday. It will also turn breezy. That system exits for Sunday with mostly sunny conditions and highs returning to the 40s. Not bad for this time of year. More moderation in temperatures after that. Here are the forecast details:
