GREENSBORO – The Greensboro Historical Society (GHS) will hold annual meeting featuring a presentation by historian Tim Breen. Monday, August 4, at 7 p.m., in Fellowship Hall,
Breen’s topic, “The Great Maple Syrup Bubble,” reconstructs a lost Eighteenth Century world of social reformers and ambitious entrepreneurs. During that time, many Americans began openly criticizing the enslavement of Africans, particularly in the Caribbean Islands, where the majority of household sugar was manufactured. As a way to undermine that cruel trade, people in northern cities argued that large-scale production of maple syrup might cut demand for cane sugar. All are welcome, and refreshments will be served.
