PLAINFIELD – The Vermont Agency of Transportation is conducting a slope remediation project on U.S. Route 2 (U.S. 2) in the Town of Plainfield, just west of the Vermont Route 214 (Vt. 214) intersection. The project will stabilize a failing slope between U.S. Route 2 and the Winooski River that was damaged during the 2024 flooding.

Work includes the installation of stone fill for slope stabilization, guardrail and other associated roadway improvements.
The contract was awarded and executed to J.A. McDonald Inc. in June 2026.
Construction is scheduled to take place from summer 2026 through summer 2027, with contractor mobilization Monday, June 29.
This week, the contractor is anticipated to mobilize to the U.S. 2 project area and begin installing traffic control signage.
From Monday, June 29, through Thursday, July 2, between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., U.S. 2 just west of Vt. 214 in Plainfield, may have intermittent single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers. Crews will be off-site on Friday, July 3, in observance of Independence Day (Fourth of July), and are expected to return on Monday, July 6.
During active construction, the project team will provide weekly email construction updates to stakeholders, along with additional traffic alerts as needed. In a June 26 Facebook post, the Washington County Sheriffs Department said, “Please adjust your travel plans to avoid unnecessary delays,” and noted, “our deputies will be in the area on our usual contract patrols but will not be directly involved in traffic control activities outside of emergency situations.”
