ST. JOHNSBURY – Catamount Arts and the Fairbanks Museum have partnered, with support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Vermont Arts Council, to host two free workshops this month for early childhood educators. “Making Waves: Art, Play, and Mindfulness with Sound and Light” is a two-workshop series facilitated by teaching artist Rebecca Mack. Workshops will take place July 23 and July 30, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium.
Sound and light have potential for scientific exploration and creative expression. Teaching artist, Rebecca Mack, will lead early childhood educators in reimagining the creative potential of ordinary classroom objects and circumstances as tools for the manipulation of sound and light.
On July 23, from 6 to 8 p.m., workshop evaluates commonly available materials for transparency and opacity. Classroom applications include projection, movement in light and dark, shadow play, tracing and light sculpture.
On July 30, from 6 to 8 p.m., the workshop introduces activators and resonators as basic components for understanding and creating with sound. Classroom applications include mindfulness, mapping, listening walks, music and descriptive language.
Both workshops are supported by instructor Rebecca Mack’s illustrated book, “A Handbook of Sound and Light.”
In the Making Waves workshops at the Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium, Mack will use examples from her book to spark thought, conversation, and creativity.
The workshops are free, but space is limited and advance registration is required. Participants may register for one or both workshops and will receive Documentation of Professional Development upon completion. Learn more and register at catamountarts.org/education.
