GREENSBORO – NEK Broadband has begun the process of expanding its network in portions of Greensboro, primarily around Caspian Lake. This phase is expected to be completed by the end of 2024, wrote NEK Broadband Community Relation Manager, Kitty Ufford-Chase in a Front Porch Forum (FPF) post last week.
Residents in the construction area who have registered their address with the company will already have received an email message with information about this phase of the project, says Ufford-Chase. Others can register now at get.nekbroadband.org.
“By registering now, you’ll be notified if your specific address is included as progress continues to bring fiber optic lines to Greensboro roads,” she said, adding “Registering is not a commitment to take service. By providing your email, you’ll be notified of updates and be able to easily choose to become a customer once service is available.”
Ufford Chase provided a list of Greensboro roads where service will become available by the end of the year in this phase.
She said the entire length of each road may not be part of this phase; it might only be a section of it because, while NEK Broadband has been very successful in applying for and receiving federal and state grant funding, each funding source has its own specific rules.
Funding requirements can result in a house on one side of a road being served, while a near neighbor across the road or down the road, whose address isn’t part of this specific expansion, won’t be, she said.
Several different contractors will have trucks in the area during construction, Ufford Chase said. “At first they’ll be doing a variety of things: checking the condition of the utility poles, trimming trees and, in some cases, visiting homeowners’ properties to perform site surveys of the grounds, she noted. Next will come the work of hanging fiber lines on utility poles.”
The FPF post notes part or all of the following roads are included in the phase planned for completion by the end of this year: Aspenhurst Road; Barre Boulevard; Bathtub Rock and Bayley Hazen Road.; Birch Lane; Blacks Point, Blockhouse Hill and Blockhouse Roads; Breezy Ave.; Cemetery Ridge; Center and Cheney Roads; Church Lane; Circus, Cook Hill, Country Club and Craftsbury Roads; East St.; E. Edgewood and Edgewood Lane; Edsall and Eveningside Roads; Granite St.; Grays Drive; Gunther Lane; Hanks Hill; Harrington and High Pines Roads; Hussey Lane; Ilas and Lake Shore Roads; Lazy Lane; Loon and Miller Roads; Mitchell Place; N. Shore, N. Spahr and N. Winnimere and North Shore Roads; Pleasants St.; Randolph, Reservoir, Rowdis, Shadow Lake, Spahr, Sprague and Vanhook Roads; Virginia Lane; Wilson St. and Winnimere Circle.
Sections of the above roads in Greensboro that are not part of this expansion will get service later, said Ufford-Chase. “NEK Broadband has developed plans to get to all locations that have existing utility service but are not yet served by high-speed internet.”
