He was born on November 28, 1951, in Greensboro, a son of Roger and Estella (Hull) Slayton. Bob grew up in Greensboro and Hardwick, graduating from Hardwick Academy. He then served as an x-ray technician with the US Army in Panama during the Vietnam War. Following his honorable discharge from the military, he returned home and worked in the Central Vermont area.
