A 90th birthday celebration was held for Hardwick native Joyce Slayton Mitchell (center) by family and friends at the Pleasant Valley family farm in Wolcott on her birthday, August 13. Her son, Edward (left), from Providence, R.I., and daughter, Elizabeth (right), from New Zealand, were among the 45 guests attending the celebration. Joyce was a college counselor at Nightingale-Bamford School in New York City for 17 years and then a freelance college advisor in China for 10 years. She is the author of 44 published nonfiction books, with most of them about U.S. college admissions. She spends her summers at her home in Hardwick. She has three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
