Wildcats Solid at Invitational
NEWPORT – The Hazen Union golf team shook off the rust last week after bad weather postponed their home opener, posting a solid third place finish in their division at the North Country Invitational at Newport Country Club.
Junior Brendan Moodie led the Wildcats with the low round of the day, firing an 86 to help Hazen Union finish third among Division II teams. Xavier Hill (92), Andrew Menard (95), and Gavin Statton (98) rounded out the four-man team for the Wildcats. Stowe took home Division II first place honors, led by Rowan Turner’s 83. South Burlington bested the field in Division I, led by Teddy Maynard’s 76. Spaulding’s Garrett Cameron (70) shot the low round of the day to capture individual medalist honors.
Hazen Union was scheduled to travel to Orleans Country Club (Lake Region) on Monday and Ryder Brook Golf Club on Wednesday, where Lamoille will be hosting.
Danville Earns First Win
DANVILLE – The Danville boys’ soccer team exacted some revenge on a season opening loss to Christ Covenant last week, downing the Saints to earn their first win of the season.
Caiden Hill scored twice to lead Danville to a 5-3 home win over Christ Covenant on Friday. Evan Whitehead, Arius Andrews, and Samson Kitonga all found the back of the net for the Bears, as both teams offenses found a spark after a scoreless first half. Simon and Patrick Mulligan provided the scoring for the Saints in the loss, as they fell to 2-4 on the season. Josh Peterson made 10 stops for Danville. Twinfield-Cabot and Danville will merge their varsity and middle school boys’ soccer teams next year under the newly signed Caledonia Central Supervisory Union (CCSU) cooperative agreement. The three schools began the merger this fall in girls’ varsity soccer.
The Bears traveled to Oxbow on Tuesday and will host Twinfield-Cabot for a pair of matches on Thursday and Saturday. It will be the last regular-season matchup in the storied crosstown rivalry.
Eames Shines for Lady Badgers
JOHNSON – Former Craftsbury Academy (CA) multisport standout Ida Eames is balling out for the Vermont State University Johnson women’s soccer team in her sophomore season.
Eames tallied a goal and an assist last week to help the Badgers blank Eastern Nazarene and Bay Path, improving to 4-1-2 on the season. She has scored two goals and recorded an assist in her five starts this fall. Eames started eight games as a freshman for the Lady Badgers, finding the back of the net four times. The super sophomore was a captain in soccer, cross-country, cross-country skiing, and track and field for CA. She was a member of the 4X400m relay state championship team that set a Division IV state record in 2022.
Johnson and Eames are back in action on Wednesday with a road match-up against Fisher College and will stay on the road against SUNY Cobleskill on Saturday.
