Mushroom Growing Workshop and Social Sept. 29

Share article

GREENSBORO – The Greensboro Community Garden Group is hosting a free Mushroom Growing Workshop on Friday, Sept. 29, at 4 p.m., on the back lawn of the Greensboro Free Library.

Mushroom expert Arthur Hynes of Glover will lead a hands-on workshop. He will teach the basics of mushroom growing, then participants will spread wood chips and sawdust and mix in the mushroom spawn. The mushrooms are Wine Cap “Stropharia rugosoannulata,” also called King Stropharia or Garden Giant because of their large caps.  The variety adapts to sunnier sites better than other mushrooms so is easier to grow in gardens, and it has excellent flavor.  Greensboro Free Library has mushroom guides and stories on display and available for loan.

The planting will be followed by a mushroom tasting social. Participants are invited to bring a favorite mushroom dish to share.  Everyone is welcome. For more information or to register interest, email Liz Steel at [email protected].  In the event of rain, the workshop will be postponed to Thursday, October 5, at 4 p.m.
