ALBANY, N.Y. – The VTSU-Johnson women’s soccer team’s magical season came to an end last week, as they fell to SUNY-DELHI on penalty kicks in the semifinal round of the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) West Division playoffs.
After a 1-1 tie through regulation and extra time, SUNY-DELHI edged VTSU-Johnson 3-2 in a penalty kick shootout on Friday to advance to the NAC West Division Championship.
Leading scorer Olivia Davis gave the Lady Badgers an early 1-0 advantage just over 10 minutes into the second half, but the Lady Broncos found the equalizer with seven minutes left in regulation.
Former Craftsbury Academy multi-sport standout Ida Eames played in 14 matches, including seven starts for the Lady Badgers this fall. Eames scored three goals and assisted on another in a breakout sophomore campaign. VTSU has truly been a Cinderella story this fall, posting a 10-3-3 record, including eight wins by way of shutout. Eames has been a piece in the program’s rebuild from a winless season in 2019, to no program in 2020, and a pair on one-win seasons the past two years. VTSU-Johnson’s 10 wins this season was the most by the program in almost 30 years.
SUNY-Morrisville defeated the Lady Broncos 2-0 in their West Division Championship match-up and will square off against East Division champs Maine Maritime for the NAC Championship on Saturday.
Bears Fall to Raptors to End Season
ORFORD – The Danville boys’ soccer team fell to fifth seeded Rivendell Academy last week in the opening round of the Division IV playoffs.
Will Knowles found the back of the net an eye-popping five times to propel the Raptors over Danville 8-0 last Tuesday. Jacoby Patterson chipped in with a pair of goals for the home team, as they advanced to the quarterfinal round. The Bears wrapped up their season at 2-13 and will head into 2024 with uncertainty for the future of the program as a cooperative merger with Twinfield-Cabot looms under the umbrella of CCSU athletics. Participation numbers for both soccer programs will be the determining factor going forward.
Rivendell Academy upset fourth-seeded Richford 4-1 in the semifinal round on Friday to advance to the Division IV Final Four. The Raptors square off against top-seeded Twin Valley on Wednesday for a chance to advance to the state title match.
