What Might a Lakeview School Closure Mean?

To the editor:

I’m writing to express grave concerns about Lakeview School’s operation in our district, especially given recent developments undisclosed before critical decisions. The decision to maintain Lakeview despite severe staff shortages compromises education quality, evident in one teacher covering multiple grades. Moreover, the disproportionate per-pupil expenditure raises fiscal responsibility and resource distribution concerns.

Claims linking Lakeview’s existence to property values lack substantial evidence, as property values are influenced more by lake proximity than school proximity. Moreover, the lack of priority on affordable housing undermines this claim. Critical questions on equity and enrollment trends remain unanswered.

The sustainability of Lakeview as an educational institution and the logic behind arguments to keep it open are questionable. We can’t sustain a million-dollar school on sentiments alone.

I’m particularly concerned about Jay Modry’s statement on potential closures impacting community partnerships. I urge Craftsbury Outdoor Center, Highland Center for the Arts, and others to clarify their stance on supporting students regardless of the school’s status.

The assertion that enriching activities would cease if Lakeview closed raises questions about community partners’ commitment to student well-being.

Craftsbury Outdoor Center, Highland Center for the Arts, and other partners must clarify their position and commit to supporting students regardless of school status.

The administration’s silence on teacher departures before critical decisions raises leadership concerns. I urge reconsideration of keeping Lakeview open without addressing staffing and equity issues.

Community partners must address concerns openly. And I urge them to do so with their own voices.

Awaiting responses from community partners,

Mandy Spaulding
