DANVILLE – Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Lisa D. Whitney, who took over the Danville Animal Hospital 18 years ago, recently announced the business will be closing after almost 50 years. Last week office staff said there are no appointments available before the office closes for good on December 24.
In a social media post Whitney wrote, “I have had some personal upheavals in the last year that have led me to conclude it is time for major life changes. The biggest of these is to move on from my role as a business owner. It is simply time for me to prioritize myself and my family, neither of which I have ever found compatible with owning a business.”
“I did reach out to a practice broker who was willing to valuate and list my practice but was very up front that finding a buyer was a long shot,“ the Caledonian Record reported Whitney to have said. “The days of solo doctor practices and private practices are winding down as corporate entities buy up and consolidate veterinary practices across the country,” they wrote, noting she added, “It is particularly difficult to attract people to move to rural areas: the NEK of Vermont is no exception.”
Whitney said her awareness of the impact her decision will have on her clients, their pets and her colleagues sits heavily with her. She hoped the community will work with her staff through the transition respectfully and supportively while they continue to provide care to pets and transition them to other practices.
In closing, Whitney said, “It has been my honor to serve the veterinary needs of this community. You have trusted me with your four-legged family members for over 20 years. I am deeply grateful.”
