Tucker Holcomb topped all Charger bowlers with a season-high 137 as CA lost in the first round of Bakers to White River Valley 267-178 on Saturday. Burlington dominated the championship match against the Wildcats to take home another regular season title. Kosmos Glestos followed up his season-high last week with another strong 130 pin performance. The Chargers have two female bowlers on the squad for the first time this winter in sophomores Arwen Alexander and Eva Small. Alexander bowled a career-high 128 at Missisquoi Lanes, with Small continuing to show progress with a 115.
“After overcoming some struggles in the first game, Arwen really came back with confidence and finished out strong! The entire team improved by 37 pins overall in the Bakers match, which is what I like to see. Gains are gains,” said head coach Ashley Gravel.
The Chargers will finish up their regular season this Saturday at Sparetime in Colchester. League Championships will be in Ludlow the following weekend.
High School Update
The Danville boys basketball team used season-highs from Andrew Joncas and Kohl Guinard last week in a trio of wins over BFA-Fairfax, Richford, and Oxbow to improve to 12-3 on the season. Joncas (30 points) canned six threes to power the Bears past the Bullets 64-63 on Monday. Guinard pumped in a season-high 25, including five three-pointers in a 48-46 win over Richford on Wednesday. Joncas eclipsed 1,000 career points last season as a junior and is averaging just north of 25 per game this winter. Danville made it all the way to the Division IV title game last season and looks poised to get back to Barre in March after their fourth straight win. They are scheduled to host Division III powerhouse Winooski on Wednesday night.
Hazen Union alum and first year head coach Rick Welcome guided his Peoples Academy (PA) girls basketball team to a split week against Division II Spaulding and U-32 last week. Former Hazen girls head coach Tanya MacAuley and her Lady Crimson Tide ended PA’s six game win streak with a 54-35 home win on Tuesday. Welcome and his young squad bounced back on Thursday with a 41-36 home win over U-32 behind 19 points from Sophie Beck and 12 from Daisy Berg. The Lady Wolves (9-3) are ranked fourth in the current Division III standings and will welcome North Country and the ultra-talented Sabine Brueck to town on Thursday night. Brueck has Vermont Gatorade Player of the Year honors in both basketball and track and field and will also be on the Vermont Lions Cup Twin State soccer roster this coming summer.
