WOLCOTT — Wolcott Elementary School is integrating square dancing into its physical education curriculum, through a collaborative effort between school staff and local dance experts.
The initiative began when Principal Dennis Hill, who has memories of square dancing from his own school days, noticed the traditional activity was missing from Wolcott’s physical education program. In response to his request, Physical Education teacher Rosemary Leach reached out to the Lamoille River Swingers, a square dancing club with almost 50 years of history in nearby Morrisville.

Judy Clifford, the club’s teacher and caller, volunteered her expertise, visiting Wolcott Elementary for three days to instruct fourth- to sixth-grade students. During these sessions, students learned both the historical context and fundamental steps of square dancing, while Leach gained sufficient knowledge to develop a modified version for younger students.
“What a gift,” remarked Ms. Leach about Clifford’s contribution. The program has since expanded to include all students at Wolcott Elementary.

The response from both students and teachers has prompted plans to enhance the square dancing unit next year, including community square dance lessons and a community square dance celebration in February 2026.
