SEATTLE – A single penalty kick ended up being the difference for the Vermont Green FC Women as they suffered their first loss of the season to Salmon Bay FC in the USLW National Soccer Championship.
Waterbury Center native Louisa Thomsen kept the Green’s inaugural perfect season alive, burying the equalizer six minutes into the extra time in the 96th minute. Neither team could gain ground in thirty minutes of overtime, and Salmon Bay FC took home the title with a 5-4 edge in penalty kicks.
On the men’s side, Vermont Green FC (VGFC) ran its unbeaten match streak to 39 games with a pair of dominant 4-0 victories over Ironbound SC and Ocean City. The defending USL2 National Champs hosted the first two rounds of the 32-team tournament in front of a standing-room-only crowd at Virtue Field in Burlington.
VGFC improved to 15-0-1 on the season and advances to the Eastern Conference Final. They will square off against the winner of Asheville City and Appalachian FC in the Elite Eight next weekend in Laredo, Texas.
